PENNY PASSING
A tribute to the “retired” Canadian penny…
The pennies slowly passed away.
Fewer in pocket day by day.
The banks will take them all.
With every deposit, big or small.
If you ask for one back, they’ll say, “No!”
“All these pennies just have to go.
Their time is done, they’ve retired.
So, hand them in; they are tired.”
Decades in wallets, purses and shoes
Has left them tarnished and over-used.
They’ve been called a nuisance by many.
I guess those people just don’t understand the penny.
Forever they’ve been connected with luck,
If you stumble upon one and pick it up.
You can make a wish that’ll make you smile.
Their power and charm last all the while.
But what luck for the poor little penny?
Who will soon be gone till there aren’t any.
I bet the pennies are huddling together in a banker’s drawer
Waiting for their luck to one day restore.
Today I read a text
It said the “nickel” could be next!
