A Thought to Ponder
WE ARE WHAT WE BELIEVE…
What kinds of things do you believe about yourself? About your future? About your potential? About the relationships in your life? How did you arrive at those beliefs?
We Believe Our Past
Many of us are dragging around a ball and chain from the past that we’ve allowed to define us. We believe many untruths about who we are because of bad things that happened or were said to us in the past. Those untruths have likely shaped the path we have taken or are on currently or continue to take in life. They have likely shaped our relationships with others and with ourselves. Beliefs are completely made up from our experiences, perceptions and what we think is true. They start when we are young as we observed the world around us, the people around us and where we fit into the mix of all that. The great thing about beliefs is that they are totally changeable. Each one of us has a unique power to change our own beliefs, we need not rely on any one else for that. It’s important to stop giving energy to the negative beliefs from the past. Every day there is a new opportunity to create and live with fresh beliefs.
What negative beliefs from your past are you still holding onto about yourself, the world and others? How are those beliefs affecting you today? What new beliefs can you create for yourself to support the life you truly want?
We Behave the Way We Believe
If we believe the worst all the time and gravitate towards believing negatively about ourselves, others and circumstances then we start to see how these beliefs begin to play out in our lives through our behaviors. We may start to talk more negatively, we let worry take over, maybe anger surfaces and we behave and react accordingly until a vicious cycle starts up. Even if the good stuff hits us in the face, our negative beliefs murmur in our heads and take over causing us to miss the blessings that may be all around us. We begin behaving in line with our beliefs no matter what the reality around us may be. One example that comes to mind is a person who doesn’t believe highly in themselves may walk around with slumped shoulders, no smile and give off a sad kind of energy. Whereas a confident person who strongly believes in themselves may walk around with their head held high, smiling and nodding politely at every passerby. Both are just as valuable and capable in life, but each has a different belief system going on internally. Our very demeanor is affected by our inner beliefs.
Some people say “seeing is believing”. They want the proof up front. But what about when we step out in faith and believe the things we can’t see or feel or have not yet experienced? What about when we believe the opposite of what our negative experiences have told us? What happens in our minds, our spirits, our outlook and our behaviors?
Sometimes we have to start with a positive belief that we may not totally feel, to get a feeling or result we actually want. When we believe differently, we act differently.
What inner beliefs are affecting your behavior towards yourself, others and your circumstances? What belief or beliefs can you change to start bringing about the behavior you desire in yourself?
We Attract What We Believe
Do you feel defeated or deflated by life? Do you believe that only good stuff happens to others? What negative things are you believing right now about yourself or your situation?
Beliefs line up with what we attract and what we attract lines up with our beliefs. Sometimes we have to start to believe something that doesn’t make sense to us at first in order to see it manifest in our lives. Start with an intention and then create the belief system around that intention to support it. When we create a belief, we start acting on that belief and start attracting all the right people and conditions to support that belief. That is how critical a belief is and why it’s often the starting point for many great things in people’s lives.
The key is to take that negative belief and turn it around. When the negative belief comes in, think and say the opposite even if you don’t feel that way at the moment. For example, instead of thinking or saying “Nothing good ever happens to me.”, try thinking and saying “I believe something good is going to happen to me!”. When you declare a positive belief like that to yourself, the natural tendency will be to line up your actions and reactions with that belief. As you do, you will naturally give off a different kind of energy or vibration which other’s pick up on. A major shift starts to happen inside and around you. It becomes easier for you to watch for signs and pay attention to all of the good that is happening around you and in your life. The shift may happen slowly at first because there may be a pattern of strong negative belief systems pulling back as this new mindset gets put into play. Being consistent, persistent and resistant when the mind wants to go back to those old negative beliefs is key. When we are used to believing in negative thoughts that is all we attract and see around us. As we shift our thoughts to more positive beliefs, our eyes start to open to seeing the good around us. The more we recognize the good stuff, the more of that good stuff we attract into our lives.
What negative thoughts are you nurturing? How can you turn those negative thoughts into positive thoughts? Do the flip!
What do you want to attract more or less of in your life? Is your belief system matching up to what you truly want in your life?
We Have A Choice in What We Believe
We have seen evidence over and over in history where someone who wasn’t anyone important in the eyes of the “world” (Reminder – everyone is important in God’s eyes!), maybe came from a horrible upbringing, started out on the wrong path in life or was poor or uneducated; rose above and did great things all because they believed they could! This was as direct result of the choice they made in their beliefs regardless of what the world around them said, did or looked like. What person, famous or not, do you know that had all the odds against them, yet carried out a successful, well balanced, fulfilling life? I can think of a few. They took their lemons in life and made lemonade!
Our beliefs are powerful and so if we want to use them to our advantage, then we should always gravitate first to believe the best thoughts about ourselves, others and our situations even in the midst of crisis or disadvantages.
What beliefs can you have to override the roadblocks that are standing in your way from becoming all that you want to become?
Visions Are Born in Beliefs
We have many examples of how positive change or great achievements started with a simple belief in something that the eye had yet to see. A vision. What is the vision for your life? What do you wish to believe about yourself that you’re not already believing? I dare you to believe strongly in those dreams, in those positive traits, in those lovely thoughts and in the good of others. If you did, how would your behavior and perspectives change? What visions could you see come to fruition? Many dreams and visions we may have never come to pass because of even the smallest belief that hides in the corner of our minds telling us our dream is silly, our vision is too big and can’t happen, we aren’t smart enough, we aren’t good enough and on and on. It’s that little negative belief or the accumulation of many negative beliefs that can set the stage for how our life unfolds.
What little negative belief or beliefs are you harboring in your mind that’s stopping you from your dream or vision or destiny? Remember that they are only beliefs, not truths and you have a choice to give them energy or not.
Dare to Believe in a Good Life
What we choose to believe in is what becomes a truth in our lives. It sets the stage for our behavior, our relationships, how we live the moments in each day, how we treat others and ourselves and on and on. What do you want to be true of your life? Start believing in the possibilities and it will amaze you at how the things you desire start to show up in your life.
Don’t be held captive by beliefs that don’t serve you.
Maybe it’s time to do a “re-set” on all the negative beliefs that are holding you back from experiencing all the great things you truly desire and deserve in life.
I believe in you,
Sheri
